On Sunday we had every intention of trying out the famous beignet (BIN-YAY) and coffee stand, Cafe du Monde. I mean c’mon people, anything coated in powdered sugar, fried AND accompanied by supposed fabulous coffee has to be good.* Anyway, we made good on that promise (to ourselves and the kids).
However, this place is REALLY popular. When we arrived (a few hours later than our original ETA) the line was a ways down the way and the estimated time to wait for a table inside was an hour.
I had began to settle in with the kids in the strollers and such as the line lengthened and Tim came back to report the hour-wait news.
It was in that same moment that a “Beignet Angel” (we’ll call him that for the sake of the story) that apparently had me, and my sanity’s best interest at heart, clothed in a white linen shirt, jeans and dark sunglasses, told us about the take out window around the back side.
We had beignets in 1/3 the time!! (seriously, it still took about 20 minutes but that’s okay. It wasn’t 60). And then there we sat, in a lovely courtyard, where the ground was coated in powdered sugar, as were our kids, and enjoyed the heck out of those things. As well as the VERY tasty cafe au lait…
p.s. I would like to point out that my youngest son is wearing his p.j. top (and did so all day) because I only packed one shirt for him to wear on Sunday and he ABSOLUTELY refused to wear the one I chose.
p.p.s. I do believe our three orders of beignets contained a full bag of powdered sugar.
*please note that before leaving on this trip I was down 21.2 lbs. That is no longer the case. I am now back to eating UNfried, Undoughy things. kthanxbai.
