The Whole Story

Y’all know I love Instagram so much that I would totally marry it, right?

Right.

But what I find interesting as I look through my pictures is that even though that one moment is captured and put out there for the whole world my 737 followers, only about 20-30 who usually “like” a photo or comment to see, they really have NO idea what is going on in the background while said photo is being taken.

For instance.

I posted this photo the other day, which is precious, yes?

Yes.

BUT.  Little did you all know that this was taken after MUCH arguing over “turns” and “can we all fit”s and stop elbowing me and OMG if I don’t get a turn right now I’m going to stomp my three-year-old foot right off my LEEEEGGG!

Yeah.  Guess who that was.

Oh and in this one (taken in the same hour), K has lost her beloved flip-flop for the BAJILLIONTH time on our jaunt to the old horse farm. note to self: make her wear REAL shoes next time.

She may or may not be giving me the stink eye for taking YET ANOTHER photo with my phone.  Or perhaps she’s just squinting at the sun.  Or both.  And the 9-year old, well he’s just a cool cat and doing his best to  ignore me, as usual.

And the middle child?  He’s taken off somewhere.  Oh, I *think* he’s over there under the trees discovering the swing that will soon be fought over. A LOT.  I swear he IS in the pic, you just can’t see him neither can I.

I took this shot on our way out the door to B’s end of the year school party.  He was so ticked at me too, saying “Mom, c’mon already nobody cares about a picture of your fruit cookies, let’s go!!”

And all the while I’m thinking, “just you wait, buddy, people are going to “like” this one, they always like FOOD!”  And I was right – 44 people cared!!  And 5 even cared enough to comment!  So there!

Oh, and p.s. three moms came up to me, “Ben’s Mom”, at the party and asked me for the recipe. No lie.  They looked and tasted even better IRL. ;-P

Then these were taken on the last day of school and I mushed ’em together in Diptic.

I took them while the boys were on their way out the door and in the background Tim is hollering “C’mon boys” and I’m saying “no, stop, smile, let me take your picture on the last day of school!” while eating my scrambled eggs and not wearing a bra.

Now I’ve ruined Instagram for your forever, right?

  2. Hee! I love back stories.
    My last Instagram photo was of a menu (because of a typo, chocolate mouse, not mousse, hehe). The background? My 1 year old was scrambling to grab the menu off me and I was telling the husband to please hold him off just for one more second so I can take the picture. Heh.

  3. My children go between hating that I need to take a picture to post on instagram to begging me to take a picture to post on instagram. Unfortunately the things that we deem instagram worthy are usually very different. And usually I take quite a few of the same picture (because someone is always blinking or moving or the light isn’t right- if I just shift it a little, or something like that) so the kids are really fed-up with me by the time I have instagrammed it. I can not believe you take those photos with your phone. Gorgeous.

  4. I love the background story of pictures! It’s one of the reasons I take pictures – as I seem to remember the background almost more – and it usually is surrounded by a fight, a mess, a threat. Some of our “happiest” family photos” are done through threats and bribes and yells and more threats. Such good memories:)) But, my kids are a bit older (teens and tweens), and they now look at pictures and laugh as they recall the background stories too! It’s perfect! Just like all our pictures!

  5. I love the back stories! As for not wearing undergarments – that’s highly likely with many of my pictures as well.

  6. Great photos and backstories! I have teenagers now, so, of course, they have to approve any pictures (of them) that I post to Instagram. Now, if my camera phone is out, I often hear “Is this getting Instagrammed?”

  7. You make me laugh. For my Outfit of the Day posts I always have to let Ben be in a picture before I can take one to post.

  10. I LOVE Instagram. I just adore the process of editing something kind of meh and turning it into something fabulous. Your photos are outstanding. And it’s so funny hearing the stories behind them. I may have to steal this idea. 😉

  11. I took a pic of Jack yesterday at the beach and he said, “no more smiles” but I still managed to get one . There is always something going on in the background and sometimes I wonder what’s better the picture or the chaos that is going on around it.

  12. I think there’s a lot of bribery on my end! And making ridiculous noises to get the baby to look at me. I have much better control with my pro camera over blur and whatnot. Fast shutter speeds, baby. I’m sure there’s a way to do that on an iPhone but I haven’t figured it out yet.

  14. Ha ha ha. I often get the “can we eat already, mom!” because I take a lot of food pictures. 🙂 But, yeah, 9 times out of ten there’s some drama involved behind the scenes. 🙂

  15. I love the back stories! There is always something going on somewhere around me when I am with the family. They are getting used to hearing me asking them to wait while I take a picture. Also? Your fruit cookies looked delicious – such a great idea! 🙂

    I’m not on Instagram, because I have a BlackBerry – but I’m seriously considering switching to an iphone so I can join!

    Anyway! Yes, food is what gets people liking on Instagram. Why didn’t I know two of our kids are the same age?

  29. What a cool idea for a post. I always feel comforted when I see a picture of an idyllic looking child and the photographer’s like, “Yeeaahhh… Sure, this looks like it’s all sweetness and light but here’s how it really happened.” I love knowing that I’m not the only whose kids aren’t always angelic.

  30. Love it. I take very few Instagrams in my house because it’s always such a disaster! There’s my “back story.”
