It is a bit hard to explain what happens when I get an acceptance email for something I have written. I mean, clearly I am happy but usually it is as if I do not really believe it at first. I have to read the email a few times before it truly sinks in. “We would like to publish” are a few of my favorite words. Having someone like my words enough to get more eyes on them and/or put them in print is always an honor.
When I received the “yes” email for my essay in So Glad They Told Me: Women Get Real About Motherhood, I was more than elated. It was my third try to be published in a Her Stories publication and so I guess it is true sometimes, the third time is the charm.
This essay is especially close to my heart since it is related to the fact that I went back to work after Ben was born. I went back because I HAD to, for many reasons and not jut monetary ones. I think this one is also extra special because it relates to my first Listen to Your Mother reading as well (p.s. forward in book is by LTYM founder, Ann Imig). They are tied together. That was a pretty difficult time in my life, actually wanting and even needing to be away from my baby. My first baby. However, just a couple of importantly placed words from a friend, helped me to understand that I was doing a great job despite my feelings of guilt.
My story is one of 60 in this amazing book about things we have to hear from others in order to feel and know we are actually doing a good job as mothers. It’s kind of sad that this is the case, however many times it is. I adore this concept because I believe one of the ways we get through the changes and transitions that motherhood brings, is by having other mothers and women on our side. My story goes along with that theme and the importance of it cannot be fully realized until you do need that support.
If you are a mother or know a mother or want to be a mother, I recommend this book. It will give you a wonderful perspective on the struggles as well as the victories associated with such an important and impactful job which most of us women do take on.

Happy pub day! And congratulations on being included in another book. Your writing is always so beautiful. You make it look easy. Easier than motherhood is, at least.
