…I was born.
My parents were here visiting last weekend and during one of our conversations my mother decided she would buy a couple of little cakes and we would celebrate my birthday a little early, while family was here.  Then she said, “Where did those 40 years go?” We both laughed a little as I told her I was sort of wondering the same thing.
Then on Sunday, as I was doing laundry, I bent down and sighed as I moved the wet clothes from the washer to the dryer. Â Bending down is getting harder. Â Tim heard me and asked if anything was wrong. Â I said, “I think I may need to got to the doctor. Â I just do not feel like myself. Â I know I could stand to lose a few pounds but I just feel like everything is so hard to do these days.” Â He smirked at me and said, “Welcome to turing 40.”
(although I’m not really sure he’s completely right and I am REALLY hoping that my new age doesn’t have that much to do with it. Â I still made a doctor’s appointment though, partly because I have not been in a while…)
I did go to the doctor with Ben (for him) the other day and the young lady being trained by the other nurse, remarked that she would be 20 on Friday! WHEE! (the day after my birthday). Â I told her I was exactly twice her age. Â She just smiled that sort of young, pitiful smile that people JUST TURNING 20 are apt to smile at someone telling them they are OLD. Â This child was born in 1995! Soak that in for just a second.
I met Tim when I was 20. Â I couldn’t legally drink yet when I was 20. I was finishing college courses and getting excited for my first trip to New York City when I was 20. Â I had all kinds of aspirations that have changed now, when I was 20.
I know 40 IS just a number (2×20). Â But it’s a new-to-me number. Â My 30’s certainly had ups and downs but overall it was a pretty awesome decade in this life of mine. Â I have high hopes for this one too. Â I hope it can live up to some of the hype.

You made me laugh out loud girl. I turned 40 last year and yeah, stuff changes for sure. But so far (I turn 41 in June), it has kind of lived up to the hype. Sure my metabolism died and my back seams to be tweaked by the slightest of moves, but I do feel more relaxed about some things in life. I don’t care as much about what people think and that is so refreshing. I hope you enjoy your birthday and your 40s!

I keep hearing this thing about not caring what others think. Does a switch go off or something?
Thank you! xo

Forty gets younger every single year…and that nurse will certainly feel it some day as well. But for now, have a fantastic birthday!!! (BTW…looks like we’re birthday twins; just a few years off. It’s a fantastic date)

Happy birthday!! My knees are a little less bendy than I remember and my hair is a little more sparkly, but all in all, I don’t mind getting old.

Oh yes. Perfectly summed up.
My birthday is next month and it is my last year in my 30s. Bizarre. It is just a number but it takes a bit of getting used to. It still confuses me how it snuck up so quickly. 40. 4.0. Huh? It doesn’t even seem possible.
Especially when I see people in their 20s. They were born in the mid 90s? How does that work? I still feel like I’m in my 20s. What’s worse is that I feel like I still look like I’m in my 20s. Until, that is, I am walking in a store and catch a glimpse of my face and think, “Wow. I look so tired.” Then I try to think of why I am so tired today and when I can’t come up with any reasons I realize that this is just how I look now. Yikes. Note to self: You do not look like you are 20 anymore. Move on.
Good thing 40 is the new 30. 🙂
Happy Birthday, Elaine.
Forty and Fabulous!
You make 40 look GOOD.

Yes, good thing that 40 is the new 30. Is 50 the new 40 and so on? Because if so I can hang with that. 😉
Thank you SO much!

I hate to say this, but Tim is right. It is like you turn 40 and all of the sudden your body starts to betray you. Of course my 60 year old coworkers laugh at me when I say that.
