So last weekend Tim and I had a few kid-free hours on Saturday afternoon thanks to my MIL. During that time we went into a bookstore where I picked up the book Skinny B!tch. Yes, that is the name of the book.
After reading about half of it (btw, if you haven’t guessed from the title, this book is not for the faint of heart vocabulary-wise) we (Tim and I) decided that the reason they are b!tches is because they never eat anything good. They’re vegans. Personally, I’d be a little irritable too!
Now don’t get me wrong. I have a cut A LOT of sugar and other things out of this house that many families continue to consume.
One of my biggest pet peeves (and yes, I WILL get on a soapbox about this) is kids and the overload of sugar that their parents knowingly AND unknowingly give them. Not because I think it makes them hyper but because I think in makes them unhealthy is SO many ways.
Although I will not become a Vegan anytime soon (or probably ever), I have to admit that the chapter on sugar and artificial sweetners REALLY opened my eyes. According to the book, “When Aspartame was put before the FDA for approval it was denied eight times.” There’s actually an entire semi-scandal behind the approval of Aspartame. And, the refined and over processed stuff (High Fructose Corn Syrup) that is in regular sodas is just as bad if not worse for you in the long run. So, I’ve given up soda/pop/Coke, whatever you want to call it. I didn’t drink that much to begin with and I can SO live without it.
Anyway, the book is very enlightening in many ways but I have yet to finish it. I may adopt some of the things that they recommend and I am even willing to try some of the vegetarian things that I haven’t before.. However, don’t be looking for me to say I’ve become a Vegan anytime soon…
Moving along (literally), I finished my 5th week of my running yesterday. And.. IT. WAS. HARD. I’m gonna need y’alls encouragement again (Kami, are you out there?). I could barely breathe by the last running stint (I think pie overload was dragging me down). But, I did complete the 5K distance, including the walking, so that was good. I hope I can keep this up because I really want to. And, I am supposed to do a ‘real’ 5K in January with some friends.
Last thing to mention, I have lost 5 lbs. since I got back from California (although I think I gained a couple on the trip…). I cut out A LOT of the junk eating the couple of weeks before Thanksgiving and I know that, coupled with the exercise, has really helped. I hope to lose another 5 or so before Christmas. And that brings me to the “Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans.”
Beth, Christy, Crooked Eyebrow and Melissa have teamed up to create this great site where we can all support each other in our endeavor to lose weight. Great idea, huh?
I’ve joined up. If you feel compelled, come join us too and lose some weight before Christmas and look great for the holidays and beyond! Just click on the button above.

Thanks for the info. I just might have to check that book out.
As for the Sisterhood, I’m not quite ready to “officially” join the Sisterhood, but I will soon.

On artifical sweetener and high fructose corn syrup–I so agree with you!!!!!! I have taught my kids to always eat ‘the real thing’ (sugar) and in moderation. And we have been a partially hydrogenated free zone for over 12 years 🙂
Feel free to email me and I can give you some tips 😉
The problem I have with the book you mentioned is there discussion of oils–they think olive oil at high heat is really bad and you should replace heated with unrrefined coconut oil but I disagree.
Yay on that weight loss–I need so motivation myself right now. I blew off the gym last week in favor of stuffing my face.
Keep running you can do it!

Are you doing the C25K program? I have some friends who have completed it and LOVED it. I actually bought Skinny Bitch a few months ago, but haven’t read it yet. I will have to break it open! I know there is something behind the sugar too – I just recently cut out my daily Diet Cokes.
Glad you joined us at the Sisterhood! :o)

I have a frined who read that book and went vegan…but she was vegetarian to start with. NO WAY I could ever do it, especially with this meat-lovin’ man of mine. I am with you on the sugar-sugar-everywhere.
You are doing awesome, keep up the good work!

Sounds great Elaine, I might have to check it out. My jeans are SO tight lately, I was just about to blog about it myself. The book is intriguing me, I might check it out. I hear you on the aspartame – we haven’t had any in 10-15 years, and my kids have never had it. I could definitely do better cutting out sugar though – I’m a sucker for sweets, hence my tight jeans 🙂
Congrats on the running – that is AMAZING and is really a big deal. You should totally be proud of yourself – and KEEP doing it. I found at week 6/7 things started to get a bit easier. Hang in there.

Keep up the good work! With running and your healthful eating. Recently my sweet tooth seems to be abating, and I can’t help but think it has something to do with regular exercise. I have my race in two weeks and I’m a little nervous about it. I was up to running five miles a couple of weeks ago, but have not has as much success recently. Oh well. I wish I could give up soda. I can cut back, but I’ve never been able to eliminate it completely.

Oh, I’m so heading over there to join…
Hang in there on the running. I did the Dallas Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving and almost killed myself, but I totally surprised myself with my time. Those “races” put a little fire under you and make you do better than you thought you could!

okay, i am off to check out this sisterhood. MY pants aren’t too tight but the pants i would like to be wearing are no where near a possibility right now…so any extra accountability is a good thing for me!
