All of our children have nicknames. Since Ben is Benjamin I call him “Benja” a lot. I also call him, Benja Wenja and Spenjamin. When he was a baby he was “The Biggest”. He was not particularly big, at all. I think I it was partly because he was so small at first, that I wanted to remind myself that someday he would be “big” (meaning healthy or tall, not sure) and always the oldest of our children.
Gavin is “Gav” for short and we’ve been known to call him Gavie or Gavie Wavie (not sure what’s up with the “W” as the start of names…) and when he was a baby we started calling him “Ohzee Bowzee”. (sound it out, it’s weird). No idea how that started or where it came from but it’s true. Thankfully he’s since out grown that one. I also use our last name in conjunction with his first name a lot lately too, and with a very stern tone. *ahem*
Katelynn is of course Katie or Kate. The boys call her Kay-Kay and I call her several different things including Katie-boo, Katie biz (I’ll explain in a moment), Kay, or “Baby”. Yes, I do still call her that.
As far as the “biz” part goes, supposedly this started with Tim calling her Princess Zizabee (NO idea, people) and it has now morphed into “The Bizzle” or Zizzle Bizzle and Ben even calls her Bizzle quite a lot.
Strange, right? But hey, she’s totally a “Bizzle”, trust me. ;P
Anyway, I figure other people do this too, surely… You know, come up with strange nicknames for their kids.
So, what weird names have you got for your kids??
Spill it.
Jessica says
First, I have to tell you my toddler is wearing the same jammie shirt as The Bizzle right now.
My kids have all sorts of nicknames depending on my mood. Princess, monkey, boo-boo, Littles, crazy, monster, and more…
Vanessa says
Love the nicknames. And we love nicknames around here.
Noah is usually Noni (given by Jude when he couldn’t say “Noah”) and then sometimes Noni Baloney, Baloney.
Jude is The Judester, Judeling, and I still call him Baby. 🙂
Kimberly says
My kids have nicknames depending on what comes out of my mouth at that time. I use munchkin, buddy, lovebug, Bug.
My 2 year old calls me Ladybug. I don’t know where it came from but I melt when he calls me that.
My youngest, Kaleb, somehow got the nickname of Ka-Ka and that stuck.
KriskropMemories says
I don’t use nicknames a lot at home, I usually can’t get their real names straight, calling out one but meaning the other 🙂
The ones that have stuck though are:
For my oldest, his name is Trevor, nickname – Clever Trevor.
My youngest tied a knot in the umbilical cord, so since birth he has been nicknamed Scout, he mastered the art of tying knots pre-birth.
Cheers

Hee! Love this, girl! We shorten the girls’s names and add things onto the end- Kayli girl, Chloe belle.
And Brody? Poor Brody is Brodster or Brods.
Such a cute post!

Ok, I am a long time lurked, but am commenting today! This made me giggle, since my husband and I had this conversation recently. My oldest is Rita who we call Rita Skeeter (as in Muppet babies not Harry Potter) or it is shortened to Skeeter. My second is Grant, we call him Bonk…he is all boy and well falling comes with the territory so he bonks himself a lot. My littlest is just 3 months, her name is Nora and we call her Nora-bean or Nora noodles. Someone used those just after she was born and hey stuck. Thanks for a fun post!

This SO makes me want to write a post about our bizarro names for our girls (and dog).
We have equally jacked up nicknames, so I think yours are perfectly awesome. 😉
Ali - My Suitcase Full of Tricks says
Great idea for a post! I’ve always called Ryan “Monkey” because he used to make little monkey arms when I burped him. He’s also Ry-guy. Natalie is just “Natty” or “NatNat” but that’s pretty much all we ever call her. Justin is “Love Bug.”
Victoria KP says
I call my youngest Charlie Chaplin. If he falls down and someone laughs he’ll keep doing it over & over again.
Mommy Mo says
I love that picture- too cute!
We have nicknames, too but my favorites are the nicknames the kids come up with for each other. For a while, Sophie and Sam have been calling each other by their middle names, which is hilarious b/c their middle names are my husband and my MIL’s first names. Also, they started calling Anthony *doo-doo* which I had to put a stop to. They also called him Anthony and told him that he was the family dog- making him crawl around and bark at their command. F’ilarious!!!!
Becca - Our Crazy Boys says
That’s adorable!
Michael is “Michael-man” or “Michael McMichael.” When he was little he was “Rocco” (my husband teased me that he wanted to name him Rocco and when people asked what we would name him, he thought it was funny to see their reaction). My grandma used to call him “Michael Michael motorcycle” and grandpa used to call him “Michelob,” yes, after the beer.
Jack is “Jackson Johnathan Reese” because when he was little he told someone that was his real name (it’s just Johnathan Reese). He is also “Jack Jack” or “Jack attack” and sometimes “Jack man.”
Funny how we end up with all these nicknames when we make such a big deal out of finding the *perfect* name when they’re in our belly!
Jennifer says
Baby Girl and Bud… yes for real. When Bud was born Baby Girl called him Baby James, and ALL of the people at the daycare called him that too. I was afraid it was going to stick with him for life, but now that we’ve moved to a different daycare no one calls him that anymore. Of course now it makes me sad.
Leighannn says
So cute! Isn’t it funny how we nickname our kids automatically?
We called ours Peanut from the moment we found out we were pregnant and now she’s allergic to nuts.
We also call her Noodle, and Little Lamb
Phase Three of Life says
Just found your blog and love this post! We are big nickname people. We call our son Ryan many names other than Ryan (will he even realize that’s his actual name?). Top on the list right now is Bubber (or The Bub). That derives from his original nickname, which was Bubzy. And Bubzy Wubzy. (Guess you and I are big on the “Ws”, ha!). And Bubzy Wubzy Houdini Pickle Pants. (Houdini cuz he could escape the swaddle blanket… pickle pants cuz we’re weird.) These poor kids!
Susan says
Super cute photo! E is Lib-er-diss…… because that’s the way her friend, Henry, pronounced her name. And we all still call her that…. including Henry and his dad! Of course, Steve calls her Lizard Breath….. poor kid!
Jaclyn says
How do your kids feel about their nicknames??? I remember my dad used to call me cookie, and I’d get all self-righteous and say, “I’m not a cookie! I’m a human bean!” A self-righteous 3-year-old is a wonderful thing indeed.
Jen says
We used to call Claire, Missy Claire and then is became Mis-E-Claire and then E-Claire you know like the donut.
I don’t know, I like donuts.
Elaine A. says
@Jaclyn-
My Dad used to call me “Big E” – which was not such a good thing since I was kinda a chubby kid. But he didnt’ mean it in a mean way.
He used to also teasinly call me “boy” because I have 3 older brothers and he wasn’t used to having a girl. ;P
My kids seem find with their nicknames. I realized I also call either of my boys “Bub” or “Bubby” alot. I forgot about that one.
Not sure how K will be with “Bizzle” if we keep calling her that… we’ll have to see… 😉
Kim says
Ok, love this.
Seth – Bubs, Bubbers, Buddy.
Amelia – Suzie, Suzie Q, Suz (no idea), Missy Mae Mae, Sassy, Sass, Sassy Pants, Sis.
Libby – Bibs, Bibbers, Sis.

My daughter, Peyton, is known as “George” (can’t even remember how that started!) and “Allie”
Allie came from saying AllieOop! when she was a baby. When I picked her up, I would say AllieOop and she would raise her hands to be plucked out of a shopping cart or whatever… Allie was the short version, and it’s still around 10 years later!
KLZ says
I call Alex Banoonoo which morphs into Boo, Booboo, Noonoo…
Most regularly he gets referred to as Little Buddy or The Buddy by the family. It will be odd having a second child who’s not “The Buddy”
No idea how any of them started.
tracy@sellabitmum says
I LOVE that picture. Eloise is Elmo and tweety. Esther is Boo, Boo-bear, Boolie, Boo-baby. Astrid is just baby.

This is too cute. My now teen children would probably kill me, but since they don’t read your blog I think I’m good. We’ve called Kaylee “peanut” pretty much since day one. She’s also been “baby cheese peanut” but most of the time now I just call her Kay (which was my mom’s name so that’s pretty cool). David was “little man” and “furry little man” and “the dude”. He looked like a little old man with a full head of hair when he was born so the little man stuff stuck. Now he’s “the dude” because of Big Lebowski. God help us.

My husband is BIG on nicknames. Each of my kids have like 5, and all are a derivatives that have gone crazy….examples…

I love how nicknames start was one thing and then morph into something else entirely. My niece is Heather, then Hevver Bevver, then Bev, then Beef, and then Beefaroni.
My oldest son Tim has been called Fat Boy forever, even though he was never truly fat. I call Shelbie Chicken and I have NO idea why. And Elayna, I call Mosquito, because one day when she was really small I decided she looked like a Mosquito, and I was not on any drugs at all, I promise.
There are many others….
debi9kids says
LOVE their nicknames.
Fitting 🙂

David: Dude

My kids are That Kid and That Other Kid (even not on the blog!) They have been that since the beginning of time! Kind of need to change the oldest’s nickname since he is no longer a kid at 21 so on my blog I changed it to My Marine since he’s in bootcamp now!
Love your nicknames!
Shell says
Love these!
The nicknames on my blog are often what I call my kids. The names came before the blog.
Though my oldest came up with the name that he is introduced by. He changed it when he was 3 and wouldn’t answer unless you used that name. It’s a nickname of his given name, so we went with it.
Jessica @ My Simply Complicated says
Growing up, one of my mom’s friends called me “Wormser.” No idea where it came from, but it stuck and when I see her to this day she still calls me that.
My uncle also calls me “Boogs”. <– No clue, again.
My little sister, M, is known by the last part of it – just short for her entire name. My dad used to call her InsertHerNameHereBear. Just Bear at the end! 🙂
The Preppy Girl in Pink says
My oldest daughter is Ash…short for Ash-bo-bash and my youngest daughter is Bean…short for well, Jelly Bean because that is what her big sister called her at the age of two when she first met her in the hospital.
I love nicknames! They are so AWESOME!
Maggie S. says
The first one, Muzz, Mussy Pay; The second one, either her full name (that’s the kind of person she is) or a goof on her middle name; the little one– Mad Dog or Floyd.
Alison@Mama Wants This says
Your kids have such awesome nicknames!
My son is Monkey on my blog and we started calling him that probably when he was about 8 months old? That sort of evolved into Monkey Mouse (thanks to my husband, who even made up a song for him using the mighty Mouse tune).
His other nicknames which we still use: Baby, LBB from when he was in the womb (which stands for Little Baby B, our surname starts with B), his real name repeated twice as it’s a one-syllable name. His grandparents have numerous nicknames for him in Arabic too!
Krystyn says
I think I make them up on the fly!
Isabelle was pumpkin head for a while, then pumpkin, izzy, izzy-wizzy and I’m sure some others.
Natalie is Natalie-Bear. Her teachers call her Nat and Natty, but I don’t use those.
My sister? Called me Whisanne? Umm, where did that come from?
