I read a few old posts of mine recently and I noticed that I used to be kinda funny.
I’m not so funny anymore. What is up with that anyway?
Well you know what? I have realized that I need to stop taking every gosh-derned thing so seriously already.
You know, like the fact that I completely forgot to put the full trash bin out by the curb for pick up this last week.
Who cares!?!
Does life stress me out? Sure. Third-grade homework, meal planning and boot-wearing (only temporary) and laundry and why? Why does it? Because this is pretty awesome, this life I get to live with these really great kids and husband. The piles of laundry and dishes and grocery shopping are simply signs that I have these beautiful, amazing people in this life with me. And most of the time I want to kiss the kids’ cute faces (and Dad’s too) and laugh at their silly jokes and hilarious dance moves when their Dad puts on the tunes on a Saturday morning…
The hubs started “DVRing” (that’s a verb now, you know) Totally 80’s on VH1 on Saturday morning. Yeah, there’s no room left on the DVR because of it but it’s totally worth it to sing to Starship’s “Nothing Gonna Stop Us Now” from the movie Manequin. You gotta love a video where the dude and chick’s hairstyles are totally the same.
Especially when the eight year old says, “Is that a DUDE?!?!?”
And then the kids are dancing all over the living room to a song that they have never heard before but that I listened to over and over again from a CASSETTE TAPE (rewind!!). Or one that I did not have on tape and would just PRAY it would be the next track they played on the radio.
Oh my gosh, they know nothing of this… “Mom, play that song off of your phone, you know, ‘Undefeated, Undeafeated!!”
P.S. a 2-year old singing Undefeated is THE cutest thing.
And they are exceptional dancers.
And by “exceptional” I mean totally funny to watch.
G’s moves are nothing short of hilarious awesome. And it’s all grand until someone does too many twirls or turns and rams into another one.
But of course it only makes me laugh harder…
OH wait. Where was I?
Oh yeah, I used to be funny.
I’m going to try to bring some of the funny back.
I’ll let you know how it goes.
Oh and BTW, the video to Take On Me is still completely RAD.
But THIS song was my very favorite back in ’88 and if you remember this song you get thousands of Miss Elaine-ous Life BONUS points!
My friend Tina and I spent HOURS listening to this one and dreaming of our long-haired, jean jacket-wearing boyfriends that we did not actually have.
Oh and here’s a fun(ny) picture of me from 1988, you know, to make you laugh.
You’re welcome. See? I’m totally funny looking.

Love the picture, adorable! Your smile is still awesome of course.
Also, I TOTALLY know the song. (does that date me?)
Greta @gfunkified says
Oh my gosh, that song! I absolutely loved this post…I can just feel you laughing your way through it! Life is totally too serious for me sometimes, too. WHY?! And that picture is completely a-dork-able! 😀
Kimberly says
Ah! I used to love that song! I had Keds too… And similar glasses!
ZDub says
You win at life with those bangs. Well done. Please tell me there was Rave or Aqua Net involved
Kimberly says
I used to abuse my hair with a curling iron…dude…i got a perm.
Break out that funny.
Let the 80’s inspire you not to wear that outfit but to kick the funny out of you with those keds.

Cute picture!
As much as I hated getting up early when the boys were little, I would watch VH1 every weekend. 😉
I used to be funny too. Now I’m just me. Blah.
Mama Pants says
Haha! Oh mama I love this post! I think you should create a one time only blog linky for all of us to link up our best 80’s pic lol
Oh and as I head out this morning to the Social Security office I am so amped to know be singing some Take on Me. And oh yes, that video is so so so amazing lol
Ash says
Still love that song! I wonder if the main dude regrets the Michael Bolton/Kenny G wannabe hair though?
Your hair? Excellent!
I miss funny as well. I think I’ll be DVRing that show too.
XO
Marie says
Starship? YES PLEASE!
And, you have the bangs that I worked ridiculously hard to achieve, but could never get quite right. You had a gift with the curling iron.
Stephanie Precourt says
You are FUN. That’s what you are. I need this reminder a lot, too. Oh goodness.

You know now that you mention it… I wonder how many people actually use watches to tell time too.
Momma@Live. Laugh. Pull your hair out says
Keds…..with socks. I totally rocked that look too!!!!
Kirsten Liebendorfer says
THanks, girl, for the smile this Monday morning. I totally remember that song. And I have an equally hysterical picture of me with the same dead squirrel posed on my forehead and big-ass glasses. But we were cool, right?
The Preppy Girl in Pink says
Keds were where it was at! Big bangs and big glasses!! TOTALLY RAD!!!
I loved going back in time with you and laughing because I knew you were as your wrote this. You’re right…life is too short to take it so seriously all of the time. Thanks for the reminder. xo
tracy@sellabitmum says
Oh my god. Those glasses. I’m so sorry.
Julia Hunter says
I think I had those same glasses! That picture is priceless.
Jennifer says
Ohhhhh the glasses. I had a pair of those, but the frames were dark. How did glasses that take up half your face ever come into style?
Kat says
Oh my word! I loved this song!!! And I LOVED the Ah-ha video. Best ever!
That picture of you is precious! You honestly look almost EXACTLY like my best friend back in the day. She had the same hair, glasses, everything. Love it. Really takes me back.
I love these moments of clarity we get once in a while. “Wait a minute, what the hell am I complaining about all the time?” I love when I realize just how great my life is, and I try and hang on to that feeling as long as I can (inevitably life creeps back in and makes me cranky again once in a while).
Fun post!
Thea @ It's Me Vs. Me says
That picture is awesome.
Meagan says
I love everything about this post. And I’m so going to steal his idea and DVR Totally 80’s. I’m really missing some good 80’s music in my life! PS. You were adorable! Crazy bangs and all!
