I Gotta Get This Off My Chest

September 17, 2009 by Elaine

I’m not even going to say their names but just know, that I want them off my t.v. and the cover of all the magazines at the grocery store. My husband expressed a similar sentiment the other day and used some very ‘choice’ words while doing so. Yes, their show was cute at first and it was fascinating to watch people with 8 kids, 6 born at the same time but now? With all the craziness in their lives (and honestly, I DON’T really care who’s at fault at this point), it’s SO over as far as I’m concerned. I’m tired of her weirdo haircut and his smug mug smoking cigarettes and looking like a louse of a father. Enough already. Buh-bye.

I watched most of the VMAs the other night only because my friends on twitter made me do it. So yes, I saw Kanye’s ridiculousness along with Lady Gaga’s and her crazy, weird outfits. Is this what we’ve come to now? People have to be just OUTRAGEOUS to get attention and even pretend to hang themselves on stage at an AWARDS show? I know, sure she’s an artist, blah, blah, blah. I can appreciate that as a past performer myself. But isn’t she just a skosh over the top? Like I tweeted, I’d take Madonna and her pointy cone bra over all that junk any day. Ah the good ole days…

The show did redeem itself a little by having Taylor Swift perform her song with CLASS. At least there was that.

And on another pop culture note, there are people who are “celebrities” (using the term VERY lightly) these days that I don’t even understand WHY OH WHY they are famous or sought after or even where the hell they came from. Like the Kardashian people. I mean really, WHO are you?????? And why do you have a show in which you are texting on your blackberry while your sister is in jail for DWI? And why in the world do I care??? (p.s. I just saw a preview for that, did NOT actually watch it…)

Sometimes I sit back and see all this stuff and think about it and wonder, “Why is ANYONE watcthing this stuff?” when we have HUGE problems in this world that need to be addressed and these people are clogging up the air waves with their full-on silliness and self-absorbed lives. That’s why I truly respect people like Brad and Angelina who are actually out there, helping others and don’t get caught up in all this other junk. Oh and not to mention, they actually have talent.

I’m kinda blaming a lot of this on the phenomenon that is the reality show. It really is crazy, isn’t it? How we can sit mesmerized by OTHER people’s (edited) lives. Sure, it can be a desired escape from our own lives at times but personally, except for American Idol (hey, we all have our vices), I’m pretty much done with that genre of t.v. Ok fine, I’ll be watching Dancing with the Stars too but only for the dancing. I do love the dancing.

But these shows like “The REAL Housewives of New York” make me want to puke. There is absolutely NOTHING real about their “house wife”ness at. all. PLEASE!!! Come on over to my house and film me with my makeup-less face, swollen feet and hand covered in toddler snot. Yeah, I dare you. Not glamorous at all, is it? That’s because it’s ACTUAL REAL REALITY. But that’s not nearly as enticing, now is it?

And I blame the”No-you-are-not-really-talented-in-any-way-but-your-daddy-has-alot-of-money-and-so-you-mingle-with-ACTUAL-celebrities-and-get-noticed” phenomenon on Paris Hilton and for that I despise her. She may not have been the pioneer but she’s the best example I can think of at this time.

I really wish some of these people would just go away. Is that so wrong?

Okay, I’m done ranting. For now.

*This post has been brought to you by a tired, cranky pregnant woman who is just really ready to have her body back and to meet her baby girl. Thank you for reading, if you did.

Ya know, I’ll have to agree with everything you wrote!! I have no desire of curiousity w/ the “rich & the famous” lifestyle. It’s actually really sad.

Rant all you want girl!!! It helps! Then bring your tired cranky self to Bach Lunch Friday at 11:30, downtown! We will be the big group of laughing sillies with the “wild” kids!! 🙂 Or at least, I will be!

We finally had to turn off TLC in our house. If a commercial came on for “that show” my daughter would ask to watch it. It felt awful to have to explain that she couldn’t because “mommy’s and daddy’s should show love to each other- and they do not.”

I’m not cranky or pregnant and I agree with you 100%. This is exactly why we don’t watch TV anymore and I cannot wait to officially cancel our service when our contract is up in a few months. (I like my few shows here and there- like Lost- but I can get them all the next day for free on the internet.)

I’m finally getting to a point where my other girlfriends will all be talking about the latest celeb antics and I’ll be the only one thinking “who’s that? I don’t even know who the heck you’re talking about”. After my initial thought that I must begetting really old and uncool I only feel relief at that. You’re so right- with all the things going on in the world today it’s disgusting that so much time is wasted on the manufactured drama in the lives of people we don’t even know, will never know, that make no difference to our families well being what-so-ever. Honestly, when you have nothing better to talk about than what Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashion wore or did last week doesn’t it kind of make YOU look pretty shallow??….Just a thought! 😉

You know, Im super sad for those poor Gosselin kids. Grown adults just acting ridiculous. Look what cameras and money did to their family.

I agree you are right about all the reality TV, the ridiculousness of our society. My secret shame however, is I couldnt stay away from the trainwreck that was real housewives of whatever city. Or Operation Repo. Eck! Probably better I dont get those shows here in Brazil! haha

    September 17, 2009 at 12:44 pm

I also had to stop watching that show, it was just too uncomfortable to see adults acting that way. And I am so glad you don’t know who the Kardashians are either…I have never known who they are and keeping thing, am I supposed to know this??

    Amen, cranky pants!!!

About the VMAs…Twitter made me have to watch too. Then I stopped because I just didn’t get it at all. Really, my parents thought Madonna’s cones and MJ’s crotch-grabbing were over the top. Ha!

I have similar feelings on all this, and have often wondered “Who are you???” about so-called famous people.

    You actually made me laugh.

On topic #1, they both need to stop talking to magazines and so on. Keep your mouth shut.

I didn’t watch the VMAs and am not sad about that at all. I have very little patience for that channel.

I watch The Biggest Loser, Top Chef (sometimes) and Project Runway. Those are the only reality shows I watch, and I do get annoyed at people on those too, but not like fake celebrities with their fake drama.

You’ll have your baby girl soon. 🙂

Well I do watch the Housewives, I like seeing how crazy they act and the stupid crap they blow money on…just because you have money sure doesn’t mean you have any class or taste! It’s my little escape from my crazy real world of chasing kids and wearing clothes covered in spitup and who knows what else because I actually look after my own kids….not the nanny !

  12. Haley says

    September 17, 2009 at 1:51 pm

    I agree with you totally.

Feelings like these is what drove me have to our cable disconnected when J was born.

Shows like you are talking about erode our minds in some way…of that, I am certain. 🙂

  13. Heather says

    September 17, 2009 at 2:19 pm

I’m cranky and pregnant, too and I so could have written this. I just want to scream every time I see their faces someplace. Their poor kids. Ack. I keep asking myself why we even pay for cable since I am pretty much maddened by half of what is on there.

Well said, my friend, well said! Especially about it being enough already with the first family…going thru a rough time myself right now, I canNOT imagine having every sordid detail splashed across the tabloid covers!

I feel the exact way darlin’,
    the exact way.

Reality tv that has slowly become staged/fake reality and it’s pretty darn sick.

(i’m tired, emotional and cranky now too. We need to meet our girls already!)

Although I definitely feel the same way, I do admit I am in awe of some celebrities and am hopelessly addicted to those trashy magazines like People and Us Weekly…

That being said, I also agree it’s a sad indication of what our society has come to. And that people like you and me are the true celebrities/heroes of our culture. Oprah Winfrey says time and time again that motherhood is the hardest job there is. The snot, the lack of showers, the endless exhaustion, the whining, the tantrums, etc….THAT is reality. We live it every day.

(and I’m sick of Jon & Kate, too. but I really feel sorry for those kids)

You said girl and I am fist pumping and nodding my head so vigorously I may have given myself whiplash. I did not, however, spill my coffee (oh how I love thee) so we’re good.

Ok, so you know I’m a pop culture junkie, but I have to admit that I rarely watch much reality tv. (Big Brother and American Idol are my exceptions…oh and occasionally Amazing Race if my husband sucks me in).

As for the VMAs, I thought Pink was unbelievably great and the tribute to Michael Jackson was fantastic. As for Lady GaGa, I have no words. I’ll give her this…she captivated my attention with that performance. I seriously could not look away. I’m not going to say that I support all the blood and violence (b/c I don’t) but it was definitely a spectacle. And then her outfits…CRAZY!!

Ah! Welcome to the dark side! Now, join to your list the hyperbolic treatment of grown men playing children’s games for millions of dollars, and you can come live with us! 😉

Boycott ‘reality’ shows, fawning award shows, and the slavish suck-up fests that are sports events! Hooray! All the money that we save can provide health care for every man, woman, child, dog, and cat in America!! 😉

    Rage on, momma!

  25. Chelle says

    September 18, 2009 at 3:56 am

Amen, sista! I honestly don’t even consider the celebrities in our time true celebrities. There are an elite few–the ones who are rarely in the tabloids!

I’m so beyond sick of these people acting the way they do. When they know that kids and young teens actually may look up to some of them. I think they are childish, immature and you know…I seriously think they must not have gotten attention growing up or as an adult. I would NEVER subject my children or family to the amount of CRAP a lot of these people do. Seriously.

And who ARE some of these “celebritites?!”. I’m so with you. What makes them worthy of having a tv show?

I do watch some reality…like Idol, Survivor…but come on. When will enough be enough?

Sorry this was so long! Haha! I’m just glad I’m not the only one who is so over Hollywood…I miss it when people were REAL.

  26. Cheryl says

    September 18, 2009 at 12:42 pm

I admit, I have some Housewives TV in my line up each week…for a good laugh.. I am disgusted by the young girls making a ton of money from horrible reality shows (Paris Hilton My BFF?), or maybe I just wish I had some money to my family name and did not have work my butt off each day!
I’m worried for our kids will watch as they get older….I can only imagine (or cringe)!

  27. Anonymous says

My wife and I have sextuplets plus one older and one younger than our middle six. When our kids were younger and getting lots of attention when we went out, we would get the question “oh do you watch jon and kate + 8?” Instead of answering that question I wanted to get t-shirts made that says:
    Yes my hands are full,
Yes I know what causes it
and No I do not watch Jon and Kate + 8, I live it!

Enjoyed your post, good luck with your new little one.

I think people watch because seeing people’s messed up lives makes you feel better about yourself. Or something. Plus the whole train wreck factor. You can’t look away.
As far as the J&K plus 8 thing. I’m over it. Used to like their show when way back when, but now K is SO FAKE trying to be all sweet and nice. We know you’re NOT! Hello!!! And J is a big ole looser now. Blah. Can’t watch.

    Good rant. 🙂

I live close to J&K, and the girl who cuts my hair (who lives even closer) said that she sees Kate all the time in the grocery store – by herself…they will actually open a lane up – just for her…pathetic. I just don’t watch much TV at all anymore. You said it all.

I so agree with you! I wish people wouldn’t buy into all this junk. Obviously they do, because it sells, but not to me. I was thinking about Paris Hilton about the 2nd paragraph, then you mentioned her. And reality TV is definitely partially to blame. It’s not even reality. Oh, don’t get me started!
