The other night right before bedtime Katie and Gavin had a little, how shall we say… squabble.
They both wanted the same “magazine” (a.k.a. one of those cheap TOY catalogs that start coming in the mail around this time of the year) and K hit G over the head with a pillow (a pillow people!! so soft – just pointing that out) since he was not giving it to her. He was of course OVERLY offended so I told her to tell G she was sorry and she mumbled something under her breath. I then told her to go up to her brother and look at him and say “I am sorry Gavin”.
And she looked glared up at me and said, “I don’t have time for this.”
Things would have been fine if I hadn’t lost it right then and there, but… I did.
As in, laughing, HYSTERICALLY.
I couldn’t imagine why she had said that. Then of course we all started laughing and the apology was never really made but it didn’t matter in that moment because everyone was laughing and happy again.
The next night we all loaded up in the van to go to B’s soccer practice. And the kids and I were chatting and then G got upset with K because she would not quit singing the same line in a song OVER and OVER again. I told her to take a break from her singing and I could see her once again giving me the look in my rear view mirror (forming a habit here, are we?) and out it came again – “I don’t have time for this!”
So then I asked the boys – Do I say that?
And they agreed I did and then I sat there on the rest of the way thinking “I don’t think I say that…” And then I forgot about it.
Until the next morning when I was relaying these stories to my husband while he was home sick and I said, “I really don’t think I say that!” And then it occurred to to us both… HE says that!!
So then he tried it and spoke the words he says when we are trying to get the kids out the door quickly to a soccer game or church or wherever else: “Kids, I don’t have time for this!”
SHA-BAM!
It is SO NOT ME this time.
Vindication is sweet.
(P.S. love you honey)
