Me: (smiling and poking at my chest) Can you say “Mama?”
G: (smiling back and very proud) “DA!”
Me: (still poking and trying to get the point across) “No, Mama.”
G: (still quite happy with himself) DA!
Me: “Say, MAH-MAH.”
G: DaDa!!
Me: (getting a little frustrated) “No, say ‘Mah-mah.'”
G: (quiet now, looking at me like I am crazy.) “Bah?” (as if questioning if he has it right now).
Me: (poking my chest so hard there may be a bruise now). “I am not Dada or Bah, I am Mama. Now say it – Mama!”
G: (toddling away from his crazy mother) DAAAAAAAAAAH!
So, in answer to the title question, Little G apparently cannot say Mama these days. But Da, he’s got covered. No prob.

I only get “mama” during crying episodes. Apparently I am correlated with bad things?!

According to the Old Wives’ Tale, that means the next one is a girl….

haha ya that’s how it was for my friend Carolanne and her son too. Ben’s first word was DahDah…but boy was she proud when he learned Mama next!! 🙂

Cute! Ya know, my first two were that way. My third made up for it saying “Mama” at 6 months.
See, you just need a third. 😉

Sounds like Ethan. He is just starting to say “Maw” when he needs me bad and he is now nearly 2!

My little girl is the same when it comes to saying Nonna and Grandad.
Whenever we ask her if she can say Nonna, she always says Grandad (her vesrion of Grandad). My poor mum is yet to hear her say Nonna.
Hang in there, one day when you least expect it, out of Little G’s mouth will come Mama and it will be so sweet.
Warmest wishes
Elise

Awwww! I think Raechel, my youngest, was the only one who would say Mama more than Dada! 🙂

Awww, before long that is ALL you’re gonna hear, lol!!
P.S. I used to live in Fort Worth….we are DESPERATE to move back, but doesn’t look to promising for us right now.

Witt has Jeff and I backwards. He says MaMa when Jeff has him and Dada when I’ve got him. So funny!
Kathryn says
That sounds familiar! Ben always did that. He even made a joke out of it saying “dada” everytime I asked him to say “mama”. Little stinkers. 🙂
Stacy says
Layla is the only one of my kids that has said mama first. The other three totally said dada first and a lot. Layla is my mommy’s girl so its no surprise that she says mama all the time.
Misty says
and I mean not to laugh, because I know this is frustrating… but so sweet too!
Lisa says
See my Spanky is just the opposite–he ONLY says ‘mama’ or ‘mommy’ ‘or ‘mom’–never dada lol!

Jack did this same thing for awhile and then he started calling me nanny.
Talk about feeling underappreciated! At least nannies get paid.

My little guy does the same thing with Mama. My husband knows he can say Dada, but he refuses to. It is too funny to watch him smile right at hubby and say “Mama” to him. He knows just what he is doing too.
Mighty Morphin' Mama says
Teehee! None of my boys would say Mama. Boobie and Dada were the usual first words.
My daughter on the other hand, cried, “Mah, mah, mah!” as a newborn. And never stopped.
