When I was a little girl my maternal grandparents’ farm was a wildflower wonderland in the Spring. I loved our trips there during that time of the year because I could break out through the back gate and find myself in an enormous field, full of greens and blues and reds and whites and yellows. It was nothing short of breathtaking for this once-upon-a-time little girl.
I would bring my bouquet back to the house and an old glass would become a proxy for a vase, as I created a centerpiece for our supper.
Today, as I snapped pictures of my kids collecting flowers, right here, right now, in the front yard, I couldn’t help but cultivate those memories. I closed my eyes and easily went there, wishing I could transport us all to that same spot, just for a bit. Oh how I would love to share that place with my own children…
But I haven’t visited that farm in years and it is now owned by someone else, outside of my mother’s family. Someday soon I will tell them all about it though. And I can only hope they have some of the same feelings I had in my zen-like field of flowers, at least a few times in their precious lives.

I love the pictures – so Spring-like! Maybe you can create your own flower farm for your kids? 🙂

Oh your pictures are so beautiful. As I sit here on a snow day in MA I am wondering if we will ever get to that kind of nice weather.
I have wonderful memories of wildflower picking in the woods behind my grandparent’s house. I rememeber wrapping a bouquet in wet paper towels and tin foil to take into my teachers. Do people even pick wild flowers anymore. It was such a special part of my youth. Thanks for sharing the memory

Beautiful!! What a lovely memory and lovely pictures to go with it. And it looks absolutely gorgeous and warm where you are!! (I will admit as I gaze out at our gray day I am more than a little jealous!!)
I remember when I was little we would go to the abandoned field across the street from our house and pic handfuls of wildflowers – my mother would give us glass cups of colored water to use as vases and we would watch as the white flowers would turn colors throughout the day.

Not only do you write beautifully, but your photography skills are amazing!
Where ever you are, I’m envious that your picking flowers in March. In MN, we have 8 inches of snow on the ground and more on the way.
I really need to move somewhere warm.
Cheers!

There used to be a field of daisies behind our house. My dad would always get mad that I “filled the house with weeds”, as I would put ton of them around the house in little cups!

Gorgeous photos. I am glad you let them pick the azaleas. I have a crocus coming up. The other day the girls yelled that their brother was bringing me a flower and on the inside I was so pissed that he had picked my crocus and that I was mad because don’t want to be the mom that makes the flowers more important than the love. Turned out that he had picked some of the same little ‘yard flowers’ your littles have in these photos. My heart was duly chastened. I hope to do better next time.
