On Sunday we had every intention of trying out the famous beignet (BIN-YAY) and coffee stand, Cafe du Monde. I mean c’mon people, anything coated in powdered sugar, fried AND accompanied by supposed fabulous coffee has to be good.* Anyway, we made good on that promise (to ourselves and the kids).
However, this place is REALLY popular. When we arrived (a few hours later than our original ETA) the line was a ways down the way and the estimated time to wait for a table inside was an hour.
I had began to settle in with the kids in the strollers and such as the line lengthened and Tim came back to report the hour-wait news.
It was in that same moment that a “Beignet Angel” (we’ll call him that for the sake of the story) that apparently had me, and my sanity’s best interest at heart, clothed in a white linen shirt, jeans and dark sunglasses, told us about the take out window around the back side.
We had beignets in 1/3 the time!! (seriously, it still took about 20 minutes but that’s okay. It wasn’t 60). And then there we sat, in a lovely courtyard, where the ground was coated in powdered sugar, as were our kids, and enjoyed the heck out of those things. As well as the VERY tasty cafe au lait…
p.s. I would like to point out that my youngest son is wearing his p.j. top (and did so all day) because I only packed one shirt for him to wear on Sunday and he ABSOLUTELY refused to wear the one I chose.
p.p.s. I do believe our three orders of beignets contained a full bag of powdered sugar.
*please note that before leaving on this trip I was down 21.2 lbs. That is no longer the case. I am now back to eating UNfried, Undoughy things. kthanxbai.
I can’t really tell what they look like but anything fried and coated in powdered sugar sounds good to me.
Those beignets look like they were WORTH it.
Oh LORD, I need to go on vacation with you. We would eat ourselves into a coma.
(Said the girl who went to the mountains and ate NUTELLA CREPES.)
that is what trips are for,..a splurge and then reel it back in when you get home!
Those look yummy!!!
Oh my heavens, those look good! And trips are all about eating the good stuff, the key is to end the gorge fest when you get home. I am still working on that one
Oooo, they look delicious!!
I love Cafe DuMonde! Just to let you know.. they have on inside the Riverwalk too. It has an awesome terrace that sits alongside the river – beautiful. Great pics!
Those are the BEST!! We went there just last month!! HEAVEN!!!
Well I’m glad you splurged a little on your trip and had fun! How great.
Oooo….you just sent me down memory lane!! You sent me back to 1999 when I was in New Orleans with a friend and I remember eating beignets from Cafe Du Monde in the powdered sugar covered ground courtyard…..mmmm. Thanks for the trip! :>
It sounds like you had a good time enjoying that yummy, allowed on a vacation, treat! :>
Cafe du Mond is awesome. I sweated it out walking from the convention center down there at the end of June a couple years back because I needed one before I left for the airport at noon! So glad you had a good time in NOLA.
Yummy!
I was trying to explain sopapillas to a Florida co-worker a few weeks ago. I’ve only found them at one place in South Florida, but theirs are almost more like beignets. She looked at me like I was nuts when I told her that.
I’m hungry just thinking about it!
For those beignets, it seems worth the slide. ;p There’s always time to get back on the wagon after the treat, haha!
Oh we need the last hurrah’s before school starts and that snack looks Yummy
My WW link for you
I am just now catching up on your last three posts. What a great vacation! And the trolley pictures are awesome! AND… holy moly you look fabulous!!!!!!

So glad you had such a wonderful vacation.
I. Want. One. Did you save some to mail me? Huh, huh? Now I’m hungry – and I just ate breakfast! Glad you guys had a good trip, but posts about yummy food should come with a warning label!
You’ve lost 21lbs?! Holy skinny-minny Batman, that’s awesome! You deserved a little fried, doughy goodness. Good for you.
Um, I want a BIN-YAY!!!!
Love the pics (I’m collage obsessed lately. Where did you get your template?) and I LOVE that you just let your littlest wear his PJ top all day. Sometimes you just have to let things go.
Yummy!
I probably shouldn’t tell you this if you’re trying to eat healthy…but you can buy the beignet mix from their online store and it’s just as good! I made some a couple of years ago when I was having a beignet craving. And I’m thinking about ordering some right now…

Now I’m hungry…
I want a doughnut SO badly after reading this!
O M G! That looks like heaven!
YUM-O! Is the hubby losing weight too? He looks thinner, too!
Way to go on that weight loss, mama! You deserve some splurging!
oh my goodness … yum yum yum. seriously, YUM! i can’t even get over how delicious those look.
Mmmmm… those look and sound heavenly! And go YOU for losing 21 pounds! Who cares about a slight de-rail due to beignets….I think they were probably worth it
Yummy. I think we need to go there just for the food. Happy WW!
my mouth is watering. p.s. next time you will have to try Morning Call in Metairie. The wait is hardly ever very long, and it’s phenomenal. I take abby and izzy there every time we visit. and yes, lots of sugar! p.s. how did you like the chicory in your cafe au lait? some people can’t handle it.
