When I was a little girl I had dreams of being the next Madonna. Okay, minus the cone bra, but you know what I mean.
I used my “jam box” to record my favorite songs off of the radio on to cassette tapes, or just bought the “single” on tape during my next trip to the mall and Musicland.
Then I would play them over and over in my room and sing at the top of my lungs. I did buy the entire album of “True Blue” and sang every song daily, I espeically loved “La Isla Bonita”. I mean, best song ever, right?!?
I did sing all through high school and took voice lessons and had some awesome solos and even played “Jan” in our senior musical, “Grease”. I continue to sing and cantor at church and have even been paid to sing at weddings and funerals. Music is still an important part of my life…
But all the while, in the background, I was writing. In my journal. On any loose-leaf that might be found in my notebook at school. In my head while in class. At night, poetry that flowed from my teen-angsty self. I was reading too. Things that were required for school, things that Oprah said we should read (after college, that is…), things that sparked my interest. Journaling turned into blogging while pregnant with my second child. (please note, all my typed journal entries about my first pregnancy were lost after we had a computer “crash” – back up your stuff people!!)
The rest is history, as they say.
And here I am today, combining my (queasy) love of performance (let it be known I actually prefer it in a group rather than alone, but I do it anyway. The adrenalin is too good to deny) and my writing.
You can see that here, in my Listen To Your Mother Video, in which I read “Expectations“.
And if that wasn’t dreamy enough, another dream of mine has come to fruition as well. That writing I was talking about? Well, a piece of it is going to be published in a REAL book!!
Volume 3 of Precipice, with the topic of “Boundaries” will be out this October.
The only thing I have seen in print so far of mine are a couple of letters to magazines, Vogue and In Style. One of them was about Gwyneth Paltrow. Both mags had Ashely Judd on the cover. Odd, right?
Anyway, this is SO MUCH better than both of those!
So what’s next for my dreams coming true? I’m not sure. But I know I will keep writing and we’ll see where it takes me.
Obviously, I never became Madonna (or even Debbie Gibson)(okay, pretending in the shower counts, right?), since my dreams changed up a little. Perhaps now I aspire to be any famous writer who made their reader FEEL something. And I’m totally good with that…
p.s. thank you to my friends I never would have met without blogging, who have supported me and helped these dreams come true. I am pretty sure you know who you are…
So proud of you, Elaine! And yes, La Isla Bonita is THE best Madonna song.
